Santa Monica

Councilmember Kevin McKeown

When a statewide lobbying group tried to stop cities from enacting animal cruelty laws prohibiting declawing, we had to move fast.  So-called “declawing” is actually the amputation of the last joint of each toe on a cat’s front paws -- excruciatingly painful, and crippling in the long term.

Santa Monica became only the second city in California to ban declawing, but others are in the process.
